This dessert seems like such common sense to me that I almost didn’t think to include it—so consider it to be a friendly reminder that mixed berries over vanilla ice cream or gelato (or any other flavor that you might like!) makes a simple but delicious, refreshing, and pretty dessert. My mom used to make this all the time—and it couldn’t be easier. You can make it with or without sugar—both ways are good and, of course, without sugar is healthier.

Mixing the sugar with the berries and letting them sit in the refrigerator for a few hours creates a sweet syrup. I love this recipe with or without sugar, and consider having the sweet syrup to be an every-so-often treat.

I’ve seen recipes that use more sugar than I put in but honestly, I think that any more than what is called for below would make the dish too sweet.

Pour this over ice cream or oatmeal, or eat it all by itself—it’s an example of how a combination of simple and old fashioned still delivers a fantastic dessert with an inviting presentation.

  • 1/3 cup sugar
  1. Cut up peaches into bite-size pieces.
  2. Mix peaches, blueberries, and raspberries in medium-size bowl.
  3. Gently mix in sugar so that berries (particularly raspberries) keep their shape.
